Tax season may be coming to an end, but like New York, tax scams never sleep. Each year, in an effort to inform the public, the Internal Revenue Service releases an annual list of tax scams known as the “Dirty Dozen.” These schemes occur most often and peak during filing season, however the dangers of these schemes remain throughout the year.
These schemes range from simple to sophisticated and take various forms. The IRS states that illegal scams can lead to “significant penalties and interest for taxpayers as well as criminal prosecution.” The IRS has set up a special section on IRS.gov highlighting these 12 schemes to educate taxpayers. Be sure to check back all week to learn more about these schemes and frauds.
